OUR OWN WORLD CITIZENS!

OUR OWN WORLD CITIZENS!

Last month, our school I.I.S.S. “Nervi-Galilei” welcomed home 18 of our finest students. The group, accompanied by 3 English teachers Prof.ssa Maria Picciallo, Prof.ssa Maria Mongelli and Prof.ssa Deirdre Walsh, completed a four-week study experience in London.
It is, of course, not the first time students from our school have enjoyed such an opportunity; recent years have seen our pupils flying off to cities such as Edinburgh and Dublin, as well as London. This time the project was entirely funded by the Region of Puglia (P.O.R. Puglia FESR-FSE 2017-2020). The general aim is to raise young people’s awareness of the fact that they are European citizens and give them a feel for both the joys and the responsibilities that this brings; hence the title “World Citizen”! In this respect, the aim of the project has truly been fulfilled; our students, many of whom had travelled very little before this experience due to their young age, returned more street-wise and with a greater sense of responsibility.
Undoubtedly, in order to be eligible for funding of such a project, the school has to put a lot of thought into both the concept and the realisation. London was chosen as the ideal destination due to the fact that we are a Vocational Institute which runs diploma courses geared towards a wide range of professional sectors including Fashion, Graphics and Photography, Agriculture, Land Surveying, Information Technology and Chemistry. London is a city which has something of interest to offer in all these fields… and much more!
A secondary aim of the project, although by no means less important, is that of obtaining Cambridge certification at level B1in English. Our students attended a four-week course at the prestigious David Game College geared towards this objective.
The trip was also filled with fascinating cultural activities which were of interest to all our students’ areas of study: Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court (residence of Henry VIII), The British Museum, The National Gallery, Greenwich, Stonehenge, Stratford-Upon-Avon (the home of Shakespeare), Oxford, Cambridge, Canterbury, the city of Bath (founded by the Romans), Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, the musical “Mamma Mia” as well as general sightseeing around Piccadilly, Oxford Street and Camden.
Our group of students sat the Cambridge Preliminary English Test on the 7th of October 2017 right here in our school; we have been a Cambridge Exam Centre for a number of years now.
All in all, it’s been an extremely positive experience and one which we hope to repeat in the years to come!
